Orphaned Installer Systems
Your installer is gone. Your system isn't.
When Grasshopper Solar entered receivership on September 23, 2025 — appointed by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice on application of Deutsche Bank AG (Canada Branch) and The Bank of Nova Scotia — thousands of Ontario residential solar systems lost their original operations and maintenance team. The same situation hit owners of systems built by SolarMax, ICP Solar, Pure Energies, and dozens of other Ontario installers who exited the market between 2014 and 2024.
"Our service team maintains over 3,500 residential solar systems today across Ontario."
— Grasshopper Energy service page (homes.grasshopperenergy.com/service)
Here is what most homeowners don't realize: your manufacturer warranty is still in force. Enphase, SolarEdge, Tesla, Fronius, SMA, Canadian Solar, LG — they warrant their hardware regardless of who installed it. The only thing missing is a service company qualified to diagnose the fault, prepare the warranty paperwork, and reinstall the part once it arrives.
Superior Solar Pros is that company in Ontario.
What we do for orphaned systems
- Read your historical monitoring data (Enphase Enlighten, SolarEdge mySolarEdge, Tesla App) to pinpoint failed components

My solar app shows zero / no data
Usually the gateway lost Wi-Fi (router changed) or gateway hardware failed. Panels are probably still producing — you just can't see it. We reconnect or replace the gateway and verify via direct AC measurement.
My inverter has a red light / error code
SolarEdge 18xB7 (capacitor failure), ABB Aurora E031 (terminal relay), Fronius STATE 567 (grid over-voltage), SMA GFDI Fuse Open (ground fault). We decode the code, isolate the cause, RMA or replace.
Production dropped 20–40% but system looks fine
Classic signature: shorted bypass diode, dead microinverter, dead optimizer, soiling, or single failed cell creating a hot spot. We bring IR camera + IV curve tracer — we find it.
Cracked panel, brown spot, or burn mark
Cracked glass needs replacement (safety + moisture). Brown spots = EVA browning or bypass-diode hot spot — we IR scan to grade severity. Burn marks on backsheet are urgent (fire risk).
Tesla Powerwall / LG battery not working right
Gateway-not-talking-to-cloud is usually Wi-Fi or firewall. Repeated cycling = battery balance / firmware. LG RESU 10H from 2017–2019 may be under CPSC recall — we check serial number first.
After a storm, lightning, or hail
We document for your insurance claim — photos, monitoring log correlation with Environment Canada weather data, isolation testing. Hail and lightning typically covered. Rodent damage usually isn't.
Common Problems We Fix
12 documented faults with named brands, error codes, warranty status.
Each card names the brand, model, error code, and warranty path. No vague "we fix solar" — this is the exact playbook we run.
1. Enphase M190 / M215 microinverter failure
Electrolytic capacitors degrade after years of high under-panel temperatures. You see "Microinverter not reporting" or a panel showing zero while neighbors produce normally. M190 warranted 15 yrs (microFIT 2010–2012 units now expiring), M215/M250 warranted 25 yrs. In-warranty: we prepare RMA documentation, 1–4 weeks. Out-of-warranty M190: retrofit to current IQ8.
2. SolarEdge HD-Wave capacitor failure
HD-Wave inverters made Q4 2017 – Q2 2018 (SE5000H, SE7600H, SE10000H, SE11400H) have documented capacitor batch defect → Vcap codes 18xB7 or 18xBC. SolarEdge changed supplier mid-2018 and acknowledges the issue. 12-yr standard warranty (extendable to 25). We pull error log, prepare RMA with serial-backed evidence, 2–8 weeks.
3. SolarEdge optimizer not communicating
One panel shows zero while rest produce. Three causes: failed P300/P400/P405 optimizer, failed panel on top, or corroded MC4 contact. We climb, measure safety voltage (~1V per opt), test Voc directly across panel, replace failed component. Optimizers warranted 25 yrs.
4. ABB / Power-One Aurora E031 relay failure
If you have Aurora PVI-3.0/3.6/4.2/5.0 (popular on Ontario microFIT 2010–2014), E031 "Read V" relay fault is documented and terminal. ABB exited solar 2020, sold to FIMER, FIMER bankrupt 2022. No manufacturer support left. We replace your Aurora with new Fronius Primo, SolarEdge HD-Wave, or SMA Sunny Boy + fresh 10-year warranty.
5. Fronius STATE 567 / AFCI false trip
STATE 567 = inverter throttling output because grid voltage exceeds safe limit (typically 253V). Not hardware fault — grid-side. We measure live voltage, coordinate with LDC (Hydro One, Toronto Hydro, Alectra) for correction, or adjust GVDPR threshold. For IG Plus AFCI false trips during thunderstorm season, we reset AFD and validate arc detection threshold.
6. SMA Sunny Boy GFDI fuse open
GFDI fuse on Sunny Boy 3000/4000/5000-TL trips when inverter detects ground leakage. Cause is almost always damaged DC wire insulation (UV degradation, rodent chew) or moisture in junction box, not inverter itself. We Megger-test each string at 500V, isolate faulted string, repair cable or j-box, replace fuse.
7. Bypass diode failure (panel-level)
Each panel has 3 bypass diodes. Two failure modes: shorted-closed (panel produces ~33% less always; stepped IV curve, hot column on IR) or open (no protection during shading; cell temps can reach 150°C — fire risk). We replace diode if j-box accessible, or replace panel.
8. MC4 connector burn / melt / high resistance
Most common "invisible" cause of production loss. Loose crimps, mixed-brand mating (Staubli vs cheap clone), UV-degraded seals, moisture ingress raise contact resistance → connector heats → melts → opens circuit or starts fire. IR-scan every connector under load, identify hot one, re-crimp identical brand with calibrated tool, re-seal to IP68.
9. Hot spots, snail trails & EVA browning
Snail trails (thin dark lines following microcracks) — chemical reaction between silver paste, moisture, EVA breakdown. Mostly cosmetic by themselves but indicator of broader degradation. IR ΔT >10°C = immediate replacement. EVA browning + delamination + cracked glass = panel replacement.
10. Rodent / squirrel wire damage
Ontario squirrels nest under panels in fall, chew DC home-run wires for tooth-filing. Result: GFDI trip or string going dark. We pull affected panels, splice or re-cable in PV-rated USE-2, install perimeter critter guards (galvanized mesh). Note: most Ontario insurance excludes rodent damage as wildlife exclusion — critter-guarding once is cheaper than rodent-repair twice.
11. Tesla Powerwall gateway offline
"Power flow grayed out", "Last reported X days ago", beeping gateway. ~80% are Wi-Fi credential mismatch or firewall blocking Tesla port 443. QR reconnect via Tesla App. Hardware (Neurio CT, CAN-bus port) = Tesla RMA documented and submitted. Warranty is 10 yrs and transferable to new homeowner with proof of ownership; can reduce to 4 yrs if offline — reconnection matters.
12. LG Chem RESU 10H battery recall
If your LG RESU 10H serial starts R15563P3, it's under US CPSC recall (Dec 16, 2020 + Aug 4, 2021 expansion) — cells can overheat and cause fire. CPSC reports 5 fires, 1 injury. LG Energy Solution will replace it free. We verify serial, install battery shutoff, file recall claim with LG (888-737-8104), install replacement. If you have any RESU 10H — this should be your first call.

Technical FAQ
15 specific questions Ontario homeowners ask.
My Enphase Envoy / IQ Gateway is showing offline. What does that mean?
It means the gateway lost its connection to Enphase's cloud — usually because your home Wi-Fi router or password changed. Your panels are almost certainly still producing; you just can't see the data. We re-pair via AP Mode using the Enphase Installer App. If the gateway hardware itself has failed (four continuous red LEDs), we document for replacement under its 5-year Enphase warranty if eligible.
My SolarEdge inverter shows 18xB7 or a Vcap error. What's happening?
Capacitor failure inside the inverter — extremely common on HD-Wave (SE5000H, SE7600H, SE10000H, SE11400H) manufactured Q4 2017 through Q2 2018, due to a defective capacitor batch. SolarEdge acknowledges the issue and replaces under standard 12-year warranty. We prepare the RMA submission with the error log, replace the inverter module typically within 2–8 weeks.
I have an ABB / Power-One Aurora inverter. Can I still get warranty service?
No. ABB exited solar in 2020, sold to FIMER, FIMER went bankrupt in 2022. No active warranty or service organization. For E031 relay failures (the most common Aurora fault) we recommend full replacement with a new Fronius, SolarEdge, or SMA inverter with a fresh 10-year warranty.
How long does an Enphase RMA actually take?
From the day the case is filed with verified serial numbers and monitoring data, replacement microinverters typically ship in 7–14 days, with installation the following week. End-to-end: 2–4 weeks for most cases. IQ Battery RMAs run 3–6 weeks. Gateway RMAs are usually fastest at 1–2 weeks.
My panels look fine but my production dropped 30%. What's happening?
Most likely: a shorted bypass diode (one panel runs at 67% always), a dead microinverter or optimizer, soiling buildup (bird droppings, pollen, agricultural dust), heavy snail-trail degradation, or a hot connector on the home run. We diagnose with thermal imaging + IV curve trace — the combination tells us which panel, which component, and the repair path.
Is it worth replacing one panel or should I replace several?
One is fine if the rest of the array is healthy. The main risk is electrical mismatch — a new high-efficiency module in a string of 10-year-old modules will be down-clamped by the older units. On microinverter or optimizer systems, mismatch matters less. We measure the existing array first, then advise.
Are snail trails on my panels a real problem?
Mostly cosmetic by themselves — Canadian Solar published field data showing minimal direct performance impact. But snail trails indicate microcracks + moisture ingress, and where there are microcracks there can be hot spots developing. We don't replace just for snail trails. We thermal-scan and recheck production. If IR shows hot spots ΔT >10°C above neighbors, we replace.
I see a brown spot on my panel. What is it?
Three possibilities. (1) EVA browning — encapsulant polymer breaking down from UV; panel keeps producing at reduced output; replacement on the timeline, not urgent. (2) Burn mark from a shorted bypass diode overheating — urgent, fire-risk pathway. (3) Localized hot-spot burn from a cracked cell — replace the panel. IR scan tells us which.
A squirrel chewed my wires. What now?
We pull affected panels, splice or re-cable in PV-rated USE-2 wire, install perimeter critter guards (galvanized mesh) to prevent recurrence. Important: Ontario homeowner insurance usually treats rodent damage as gradual/wildlife exclusion — you pay, not your insurer. Critter-guarding once is cheaper than rodent-repair twice.
Can you climb on my metal roof?
Yes. We carry standing-seam-compatible roof anchors and work under the Ontario MOL Working at Heights regulation. We do not do metal-roof penetrations for new installs — but we can lift and replace existing panels on standing-seam, exposed-fastener, or trapezoidal metal roofs without compromising the roof.
What does a rapid shutdown trip look like and why does it happen?
When rapid shutdown initiates, the controlled DC conductors must drop to <30V outside the array boundary (1 ft from array) within 30 seconds. Inverter status shows "no DC" or specific RSD code. Common causes: power outage (normal — recovers when grid returns), stuck RSD button, failed initiator coil, or Tigo/APsmart RSD module not receiving keep-alive signal. We test by initiating manually and measuring with a meter; then replace the failed component.
Why is my battery cycling so often?
Three usual causes. (1) Reserve setting in Tesla App / Enphase App set too low → discharges nightly to near-zero, recharges aggressively. (2) Firmware mismatched between modules (multi-module installs). (3) Battery genuinely degraded and management system rebalancing more often. We check firmware, settings, run a capacity test before recommending hardware action.
Do I need to worry about my LG Chem RESU battery?
If you have an LG RESU 10H with serial starting R15563P3, yes — it's under US CPSC recall (Dec 2020 with Aug 2021 expansion) for fire risk. LG Energy Solution replaces free of charge (888-737-8104). For other LG RESU models or vintages, check serial against latest recall lists. We verify recall status as the first step on any LG battery service call.
My Tesla Powerwall has a "gateway not talking to cloud" error.
About 80% of the time this is your home internet — new router, changed password, firewall blocking Tesla's outbound port 443, or Wi-Fi signal too weak. We reconnect via QR-code scan in the Tesla App. The other 20% are hardware: Neurio CT module inside the gateway, gateway's communication board, or Powerwall CAN-bus port. Hardware failures we document for Tesla's 10-year warranty submission.
My inverter fan is loud — is that a problem?
Often yes. A loud or grinding cooling fan on a SolarEdge HD-Wave, Fronius Primo, or SMA Sunny Boy is usually a bearing wearing out, and the next stage is fan failure followed by overtemp shutdown in summer. Fans are replaceable as a service kit on most modern inverters; we replace before the inverter starts derating.
